Feeling Great!

Woo-Hoo! I am feeling SO much better and am even LIKING food again! So happy. I still get pretty queasy after 4 pm, but during the day I am feeling normal again. As I am typing this, Semaiah and Tru are napping, Cameron has the 5 older kids at the dentist (yes, he is super-dad!) and I have made lunch (homemade spinach-broccoli soup) and dinner (Lahmajoon--Turkish pizza) and I am sitting here eating a bowlful of homemade salsa. I am loving this part of pregnancy! Food is so good--I really think that once morning sickness is done food tastes amazing during pregnancy--and I am feeling the baby kick, reminding me of a tiny little being who is always with me. It took me many pregnancies to actually enjoy being pregnant.

Honestly, I didn't really and truly enjoy being pregnant until Semaiah. I think that God changed my heart when I finally submitted to Him and His purpose for me and fully realized how much of a blessing pregnancy is. I understood that this is what God created my body to do and it was not my right to decide what I would do with it, but entirely up to Him, because I am to present my body as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1). That meant that every wave of nausea, every ache in my back, painful ligament stretching, and swollen ankles was designed by my Creator to make me more like Him! I had a choice to try to race through this pregnancy, in my mind always looking forward to the end or I could enjoy the present, the experience of being pregnant, this GIFT. Really, I am not guaranteed another pregnancy, I am not even guaranteed a healthy baby, or a baby who will live, as we almost lost our sweet Katria soon after birth. God taught us so much through Katria and we are so thankful that she is with us and that because of her we now have 4, almost 5 more blessings! Every moment, every day is to be treasured, every kick, every complaint turned into praise and thanksgiving for life. And what a privilege that I get to be used as the vessel with which God will bring forth this new life!

So, as I pass from morning sickness into the tranquil second trimester soon, I am rejoicing! We will soon find out whether we are having a boy or a girl and I am so excited! We always find out ahead of time. That's just my personality. I am really not one for surprises. Cameron always does the ultrasound with just us and our children in the room. It really is a special time for them to be involved in because they are not there at the birth. We all get to find out together. For many weeks now, I have been thinking that this little one is a girl. Just as with my other girls, I have wanted sweeter things, salads, fruit and could not tolerate meat. With my boys, I wanted meat and spicy food. This time, I am craving blueberries! However, just recently, I have wanted salsa--spicy, fresh salsa. For me, that was a classic craving when I was pregnant with my boys. So, who knows? We are already talking about names and already have a few choices nailed down.

I would love to hear from you! If you are pregnant--when you are due, and what you are craving. Or, what you craved specifically when having a boy vs. a girl. Please leave me a comment so that I can get to know you! :)

In Christ, Laura

I'm so glad you are feeling better! As I read your past few entries, I remember very well the all day sick feeling....with my son (he's 5 now)it was like that, but with my daughter (she's 3 now)I didn't just feel sick but also got sick a few times. I would CRAVE watermelon, eat 1/2 of it and then loose it all!!! yuck!
But I think if I remember I also craved more sweet stuff with my girl. I was so glad the "sickies" didn't last through the whole pregnancy! I truly enjoyed being pregnant once I felt better...

You (almost) make me want to have another.(lol) I do pray about it though! I enjoy your blog posts!

With 11 pregnancies ... I never had a clue whether it was a boy or girl. We always waited to be surprised (even with the twins ... we knew we were having twins, but didn't know boy/girl).

With my first pregnancy, I absolutely craved Mexican spicy ... but would actually get nauseas if I even smelled barbecue sauce.

No real cravings for the remaining pregnancies.

No morning sickness until pregnancy #9.

Interesting enough, my girls were all smaller than my boys (smallest girl 6.11 and biggest boy 10.1), but I gained 40- 50# with each pregnancy, so couldn't tell by weight gain or anything.

Induced 6 of my babies ... 1/2 girls 1/2 boys.

I loved being pregnant ... each and every time.

Blessings to you as you await the arrival of this precious child.

Erin, you should! ;) You will never regret it!

Laurel, I love hearing all of your pregnancy, labor, and birth stories! I admire you for waiting to find out the gender! I am horrible with surprises. I even like knowing what I am getting for Christmas! LOL!

I began following your blog when a couple of mutual friends in Durham recommended your husband as an OB when I was expecting our 3rd child (Naomi just turned 2 Feb.13). I have 2 older girls (13 & 10) when the Lord began changing our hearts a few yrs ago about having more children. I LOVED my pregnancy w/ #3. Like you, the Lord did a major heart transplant with me on how I view pregnancy and "new" surprises. With #3 (girl), I craved watermelon, salads and had a great disdain for sweets and coffee (typically a staple for me). After losing #4 this summer, I am expecting again due Sept. 5. I have resonated with your recent posts and seem to be a couple of weeks behind you...will be 12 wks on Wed. I started taking B6 after your previous post and have suffered with all day sickness. I've also worn Seabands and that has helped. Thinking maybe I was past the sick phase, I took my bands off yesterday- BIG mistake, not quite there yet. I'm really looking forward to the 2nd trimester and maintaining a healthy pregnancy. After resuming a normal diet and exercise regimen post birth, I lost my milk supply w/ #3 and had to supplement. I WILL NOT make that mistake again, so I'm determined to maintain health before delivery and dealing with the "extra pounds" until I finish nursing. Thanks for all your post. I feel as though I know you and your family and often feel prompted to post, but hesitate as I remind myself you have no clue who I am. ;-) -Tonya

Hi Laura!
I am 8.3 weeks pregnant, first pregnancy. As you may remember in one of my other comments I haven't had that many symptoms. However sometimes I am extremely HUNGRY. Where if I don't eat I will get sick! I have never eaten so much in my life! haha. Well I had my first ultrasound today and got to hear the heartbeat (OMG!!) and today I have had a nauseas feeling all day and have been pretty lazy. I run a lot so it's not like me to be lazy...plus I had the day off work, so that helped and I didn't want to get off the couch. My cravings have been lots of protein, when I am actually craving something. Specifically chicken. Also anything in sight, really. Not today though. I didn't want to eat much at ALL today. ugh. I have more info in my blog! I am horrible with surprises too, as is my hubby. We will definitely be finding out! Also I have wanted to mention this before but didn't want to sound odd or anything but Dr Mouro is actually my OB! He is a great doctor! We always run out of time at appointments for me to bring it up. :)

Nicole,

I craved protein with my boys, but not my girls. We will see if that stays the same this time. I am trying to talk Cameron into doing an ultrasound around 16 weeks.

That is awesome that he is your OB! I will have to tell him I "know" you! LOL! I think he is a great dr., too, but I am just a little biased. He delivers all my babies! I think having had so many babies himself, it makes him a better dr.! He has been through so many different types of deliveries personally with me that he is really able to empathize with his patients.

Nicole, are you going to continue running during your pregnancy? I always workout, but not during the first trimester. I just feel too awful. I started running again this past weekend, nothing impressive though. I have never run past 16-20 weeks or so, but move on to workout videos (not pregnancy ones, Jillian Michaels or The Firm). This pregnancy, I am going to try to run as long as I can.

Laura- Yeah I found this blog after I had surgery (done by your husband!) and I was bored on the couch..I googled his name because I was looking for more information on him + surgeries (pure boredom) and this was the second link that showed up because it showed that letter that he wrote a few months ago! Weird!

As for running, I'm trying to run about 10-15 miles/week. In the summer I was running about 20 miles/week due to training for a half marathon and a 10 mile race I run each year in August (won't be doing it this year!) I considered running a half on May 20th before we found out about the pregnancy but I think I'll just enjoy running a local 5k or 10k and take it "easy" for my first pregnancy even though there are several pregnant runners that run half marathons. I also spin when I can so I have that variety too. I love Jillian Michaels DVDs as well! I notice I get out of breath easier though so I have to tone it down a notch with the running and Jillian Michaels. We have a lot in common :)

Hi Laura,

That is great that you're feeling good again. It's amazing how when the nausea goes away, it's like you have a new lease on life.

Here's how my pregnancies have gone:

Pregnancy #1: I did not have any nausea. However, I miscarried at 8 weeks.

Pregnancy #2: This is now my daughter Ally who will be 3 in May. I started feeling yucky around 5 weeks, but it wasn't that bad and as long as I ate something, I felt better. I think I ate a lot of saltines during that time. But at 10 weeks, the nausea went to a whole new level, and it was mostly happening in the evening. It was pretty intense and I did a lot of dry heaving (sorry, I know that's kind of gross). I only threw up once though. And then, right at 14 weeks, a switch flipped, and I felt amazing. I don't think I really craved anything, but I can't remember very well. I worked out (ran/lifted weights) until almost my 3rd trimester.

Pregnancy #3: I am almost 30 weeks pregnancy and due with a girl in early May. This pregnancy has been almost exactly the same as #2. I think I started feeling yucky around 6 weeks, and it was worse in the morning and at night (middle of the day wasn't too bad). I think the nausea was worse earlier on this time too, but it seemed to taper off as I started approaching 2nd trimester, as opposed to all being concentrated between weeks 10-14 as last time. I never threw up though. I craved soup during 1st trimester, I think because it was salty and hydrating. I have also been very thirsty during this pregnancy. I did run/lift weights during 1st trimester and partway into 2nd trimester, but then my dissertation data collection got very busy right around Thanksgiving. So now, my exercise is a lot of walking back and forth between buildings on campus.

As far as aversions go, for both pregnancies #2 and 3, coffee and diet sodas made me feel sick during 1st trimester. Also during 1st trimester of pregnancy #2, I was totally grossed out by Honey Nut Cheerios. Weird, isn't it???

My last 2 pregnancies I did Deep Water Aerobics throughout the whole pregnancies. It was a wonderful way to stay in shape.

:) :) :)

Beth, Congratulations! That is so exciting! I also cannot drink coffee during my first trimester--well, I am 14 weeks and it still makes me sick. And I love coffee usually! (Cameron and I met while working in a coffee shop in college!)

Tonya, It is nice to "meet" you! LOL! Congratulations! I am glad you introduced yourself. :) I also have to be careful when I am nursing about losing all of my baby weight. I seem to need to keep a bit of it in order to keep a good supply.
